Holiday Phone Coverage for a Plumbing Business: A Simple Plan for Thanksgiving to New Year's

· AnswerBack

The holidays bring guests, full kitchens and cold snaps, and plumbing calls don't stop because the shop is closed. They also bring days when you and your crew want to be off the phone. A little planning before Thanksgiving means every caller still gets a next step.

This guide covers holiday phone coverage for a plumbing business: deciding your hours, setting up forwarding, writing a greeting and testing it before the first holiday.

Step 1: Decide your holiday hours now

Write down, for each holiday and the days around it:

  • Open, closed or on call.
  • Who's on call, if anyone, and how they're reached.
  • What counts as urgent for your shop, such as active leaks or no water, and what can wait for the next business day.

Post the same hours on your website and your Google Business Profile so customers see one answer. See the Google Business Profile phone number guide for plumbers.

Step 2: Choose where calls go when no one picks up

Option Good for Watch out for
Voicemail Very low call volume Many callers hang up at the beep
On-call tech's cell Shops with a set rotation Burnout, and missed calls during jobs
Missed-call text back A quick reply No caller details unless they text back
Answering service Catching details on calls you can't take Read the plan terms and hours first

For a side-by-side look, read answering service vs. voicemail for plumbers and missed-call text back vs. answering.

Step 3: Set up forwarding a week early

Use your carrier's conditional forwarding so calls you don't answer go to your chosen backup. Set it up at least a week before the first holiday so you have time to fix problems. Codes for the major carriers are in call forwarding codes for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

Step 4: Update your greeting

Say your holiday hours, what to do in an emergency and when you'll call back. A sample:

"Thanks for calling [Shop Name]. We're closed for the holiday on [date]. Please leave your name, address and what's going on, and we'll call you back [when]. If there's immediate danger, hang up and call 911."

More scripts are in our plumber voicemail greeting script guide.

Step 5: Test it

Call your business number from another phone on a weekday and again in the evening. Let it ring out. Check where the call lands and that the details reach whoever's on call.

Step 6: Plan for cold snaps

A hard freeze can bring a burst of frozen-pipe calls at once. Decide ahead how you'll sort them. Our guide to frozen-pipe calls and answering services covers this.

Where AnswerBack™ fits

AnswerBack is an AI answering service for plumbing shops nationwide across the United States. Callers are answered by AI, not a live person. You keep your number.

  1. You forward only the calls you can't take to AnswerBack's line.
  2. Our AI answers the call and asks for the caller's name, service address and a brief description of the issue.
  3. AnswerBack passes those details to you so you can call back.

AnswerBack doesn't diagnose, give repair instructions, promise appointments or say a plumber has been dispatched. A follow-up text goes out only if the caller agrees during the call. Callers can reply STOP to opt out or HELP for help. AnswerBack isn't an emergency service. In immediate, life-threatening danger, call 911.

Every plan starts with a free 14-day pilot: no card, and the pilot never rolls into a paid plan. After that, plans are a flat Solo $99, Pro $179 or Crew $299 a month, with a one-time $149 setup on monthly plans. Paid plans renew monthly until canceled. See pricing and the Cancellation & Refund Policy.

Start the free pilot or call our main line at +1 (724) 618-3866. If the main line doesn't connect, use (205) 851-5102. Calls may be recorded for security and quality.
